How to Choose the Perfect Location

Updated: Nov 15, 2024

As a photographer, I am so grateful to have the privilege of capturing my subjects in a variety of gorgeous locations. There are so many options when it comes to choosing your location, much more than whether you want to have your photos taken inside or out.

There are a variety of factors to consider when choosing your location. Weather is one thing to consider, especially living in Alberta. The occasion is another thing to consider. Are you planning a romantic shoot with your significant other or a lifestyle shoot with your children? The location can be key to portraying the mood of the images.

Often a certain location will catch my eye. I will point out to whoever will listen how amazing it would be to take photos there. Old barns, canola fields, gardens, and city streets. It doesn't take much convincing to get me to shoot at a new location. There is an endless list of locations where I would love to capture photos.

It's easy to take beautiful photos in stunning locations. Still, I think it's worth noting that a grassy field during the sunset or a cozy couch in the winter can provide an excellent place to capture your favourite people. Many locations may not seem like ideal spots but at the right time of day when the lighting is just right, something magical happens.

With all that being said, it ultimately comes down to who the photo is taken of as opposed to where it was taken.

Below is a list of some of my favourite local spots in Central Alberta:

Red Lodge Provincial Park

Centennial Park - Innisfail

Olds College
